SLS and BALIF

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Recently, Delia Swan was a panelist at the BALIF meeting in San Francisco.  The panel was geared toward those attorneys who were in the process of the job hunt and needed expert advice on how to navigate and understand the current legal market. Delia was the only recruiter on the panel, and she provided thorough advice about resumes, cover letters and interviews.

Legal events in California – get out there!

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

We at Swan Legal Search are always talking about networking and getting out to meet people.  It’s the best way to get new cases and it’s the best way to make a lateral move into another firm.  So, in order to inspire you to get out and about, we’re posting a list of all of the legal events in California in September.  So, no excuses!  Time to get meet and greet and shake hands. You never know who you’ll meet…

CAALA Las Vegas

This Los Angeles-based organization holds its annual conference in Vegas!  This event is the largest convention of plaintiff trial attorneys in the country. For three days, you can attend educational sessions given by accomplished trial lawyers, jurists and legal consultants.  Most importantly, you can network with 2,000 attendees!  And did we mention that you can earn up to 17 hours of MCLE credit?

San Francisco Bar Association

Who can resist a good, old-fashioned game of kick ball?  The SFBA hosts a kickball tournament that is sure to be an interesting afternoon.  No pressure, just fun.  This is networking at its finest!

Fresno Bar Association

The Central California Legal Service (CCLS) provides free legal services to the Valley’s veterans and welcomes the participation of pro bono attorneys to a three-day Veteran event.  This is great way to get involved in the community at large and the legal community.  And, most importantly, you’ll be helping others.

Los Angeles Bar Association

For those of you in the world of IP, you know that many issues quickly become international issues.  This event, IP Meets the Pacific Rim, is perfect for IP attorneys or those who want to learn more about the practice area.

Beverly Hills Bar Association

If you’re in the entertainment industry, this is the event for you.  This luncheon, hosted  by The Beverly Hills Bar Association, looks at the income streams in the music industry.  Some of the most well-known legal minds in entertainment will be speaking.

San Diego Bar Association

Attention law students!  This reception, hosted by the San Diego County Bar Association is a wonderful opportunity to network with lawyers and judges.  This promises to be a fun event for attorneys, students and judges alike!

Choose one of these great events and go!  It’ll be good for you and good for your career – it’s a win-win!

Swan Legal Search’s favorite blogs

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Recently, we noticed that the ABA journal had their own blog contest (for which we’d love to be nominated – hint!).  Of course, we at Swan Legal Search have our favorite legal blogs (blawgs, as some call them), and we wanted to share with you, our reader.  We think you’ll enjoy these blogs, as well.

California Employment Law

The all-attorney author pool write timely posts that cover a variety of topics regarding legal issues California employers face, including class action, wage and hour, overtime, discrimination, harassment and privacy issues.  A great read for anyone who is interested in owning a business and hiring an employee.

The One Page Blog, by Richard Hsu

Cleverly using the domain Hsutube.com, Richard Hsu writes about all things intellectual property on his blog.  Interspersed with pieces of humor, this blog contains great IP information – interesting enough for IP lawyers, yet simple enough for those of us who have practiced general civil litigation.  Richard’s blog is a quick read, and definitely worth checking out!

Wall Street Journal law blog

We can’t forget WSJ!  This blog contains some of the latest legal stories from all over the country.  It’s a must read for any lawyer.

Above the Law

Humor and law together at last!  We love Above the Law’s mix of the absurd and the fascinating in the world of law.  Check it out (as if you haven’t already).  You won’t be sorry – you may actually get a chuckle out of it.

That’s it for us this week.  How about you?  What blog post is on your “must read” list?  And, if you have a minute, be sure to tell ABA that we’re on that list, as well!

What am I going to do with a box of 1,000 business cards?

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

The question we’ve all asked at one point in time.  You know the drill.  You get a new job, a new office and desk and begin working with a new secretary.  About two weeks into the routine, a large rectangle ends up on your desk with a business card taped to the top.  Another 1,000 business cards just for you.  When you left your last job, you had approximately 900 of the cards remaining in the rectangle box and now you’re starting all over.

As impossible as it seems, those 1,000 business cards should be gone in about 6-9 months!  It’s a crazy notion, but it works.  Business cards are actually the cheapest way to generate revenue for the firm.  The only catch is that you have to give them to people.

As attorneys, building a book of business isn’t typically one of our core strengths.  No one wants to market themselves for fear that they will look like a used car salesman.  I’ve heard the complaints a million times.  However, I’m here to tell you that no one views a business card as a form of sales.  Most people simply view the card as a way to contact you should they ever need your services.  This is exactly what you want them to do!

So, don’t be afraid to hand out business cards.  You should have at least five cards in your purse or wallet at all times.  Hand them out generously.  They cost somewhere in the ballpark of $.02 each, so go crazy!  Leave one on your table at a restaurant.  Give one to your brother-in-law at the family holiday party.  Give one to every attorney you meet.  Chances are they he or she will come across a case in your practice area at some point, and now the attorney can contact you to handle the matter.  (Referral business is the best!)

Business cards are really an old-fashioned piece of marketing that works.  So, don’t let them linger in your bottom drawer – get them out into the world and see what happens.  My guess is that within a few months of passing out the cards, you’ll start receiving more phone calls and emails about potential cases.  In addition, you’ll be building awareness about your practice area and your firm.  All this for just $.02!
